VIDEO: Great white shark takes a bite out of an underwater camera
The footage captured the moment the shark opens her mouth and chomps the underwater camera.
UNDERWATER FOOTAGE captured by a US scientist shows us exactly what it's like to be preyed upon and swallowed by a shark.
Greg Skomal from the Massachusetts Marine and Fisheries Division was out tagging great white sharks just off Cape Cod when a female approached his GoPro camera, opened her wide mouth and chomped it to pieces.
"I had the camera on a pole in the water and the shark was swimming and I'm thinking, 'I'll get a great view of the face of the shark and that will help us identify it'," Greg told New England Cable News.
Greg added that while he considered this to be unusual behaviour, it's likely the female took a bite to identify what the foreign object was.
Now, the footage will be examined to determine whether the female is new to the area or if she's one of the 300 sharks already named and recorded by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy group.
